Then I pause and think about the fact that I actually try to figure the stuff out (sometimes hopelessly, such as when it comes to intricacies such as the Fed’s policies), and the majority of Americans are clueless. I mean, how else could we have ended up with our fearless leader for a second term? Well, if you are reading this Opine, it means you too are trying to figure it all out. So, let’s have a crack at it, shall we?
Senator Ted Cruz ran on a Conservative/Libertarian platform and promised to stand by his convictions if elected. He was elected, stood by his convictions, and was pilloried by wise men from the left and right. He was going to destroy the Republican party and eradicate any chance of victory in 2014 and 2016.
But a funny thing happened on his way to the forum of self-destruction. The American public got a taste of what he had been saying about Obamacare, and guess what? It turns out he was right. Have you noticed that someone hit the mute button on all that noise about Ted Cruz?
“If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan. Period.” – President Obama
There are only two ways to look at this.
1) He was deliberately misleading all Americans,
2) He was misled by his own staff, and didn’t have a clue.
Actually, there is a 3rd way to look at this, and that is 1) and 2) above both apply. I vote for #3. Folks, if you think for a second that this administration wants to see anything but an all out government takeover of healthcare, you have not been paying attention. This is one of the most cynical, dishonest campaigns ever foisted upon the American public. They dream of a single payer system. Their plan is to take their current failures and blame them all on the greed and avarice of the private sector insurance companies. They will claim the only way out of this mess will be to have the government take over the whole process. If we do not stem this tide, and reverse the damage done, this will happen; mark my words.
Don’t get me wrong. We still have some big problems. I could not disagree more with the Limbaughs and Hannitys of the talking head world. They say that our problem is that we keep nominating moderates (weenies) and the only way we are going to take back the Congress and White House is by nominating someone to the right of Attila the Hun. They are wrong.
Some of you aren’t going to like this, but here we go. We need to park our personal opinions about abortion on the curb, outside the tent. The tent must welcome moderate women and younger Americans. We seem to think that just because we know killing unborn babies is an abhorrent sin, no one can be one of us unless they agree. Guess what? There is a law in this land, and there are millions of people who otherwise would be Republicans if we simply compartmentalized the “A” word, and stopped self-destructing because of it. Seriously; open the tent flaps, and invite those whom we have alienated back in. Don’t do it, and we’ll keep losing. It is that simple.
The President and Secretary Kerry seem hell-bent on doing something, (anything) to get a deal done with Iran. Look, when France thinks we are being spineless, well, as my kids would say, “OMG!” You don’t think this President is looking for something (anything) to distract the people, do you?
Egypt, Libya, and Syria
What a disaster. We are clueless, rudderless, and leaderless. It is an embarrassment. Shame on us.
This tragedy remains a story untold. We abandoned our people. We had fair warning. We ignored them, and they died because of it. This was on Hillary’s watch. Then, because the President had made the destruction of Al Qaeda a cornerstone of his re-election campaign, he and his entire administration concocted and perpetuated a lie about the cause of the incident. It was never about the video. The President knew that, and he flat-out lied.
The Filibuster Vote
In 2006, when some Republican suggested that the filibuster rule should be changed, “Mr. Obama, as a senator in the minority…said neither party should “change the rules in the middle of the game so that they can make all the decisions while the other party is told to sit down and keep quiet.” Under such a change, “the bitterness and the gridlock will only get worse.”‘ (Wall Street Journal) Shame on Senator Reid and President Obama. They will rue the day when the Republicans win the Senate. The President has spent the past 5 1/2 years accusing the Republicans of partisan politics. We have never had a more divisive, less compromising president in our country. The irony is rich.
I am so tired of this never-ending shrill chant from the left. Whenever anyone says anything critical about the President, it’s because he or she is a racist. Oprah, Chris Matthews, Juan WIlliams, and Piers Morgan and the rest of these nincompoops need to shut-up. It’s absolutely ridiculous. People don’t dislike the President because he is black. .They dislike the President because he is a terrible President. On top of that, he is arrogant, smug, and condescending. Who cares what color he is? He is bad news for our country. Color is irrelevant. Enough of the racism nonsense!
Corporate Tax Policy
For years we have had an insane double taxation policy for US Companies doing business abroad. As a result we have lost billions and billions of tax revenues, as companies have relocated outside the United States. Well, we’ve now hit rock bottom.. Who would ever have thought (in our lifetimes) that US companies would be re-domiciling in the United Kingdom for tax purposes? Seriously, that is bonkers. But that is what is happening. It’s time to fix our corporate tax structure
The Flat Tax
It comes up every four years and then disappears. It needs to happen. We need to throw our personal tax code in the waste bin and simplify/flatten our taxes. This can be done in a revenue accretive way. It will require many who have paid no taxes to pay some, and it will reduce the ridiculous tax burden on today’s producers to a level wherein they will have enough disposable income to start generating economic activity once again. A rising tide lifts all boats. The democrats refuse to acknowledge this fundamental reality.
What can I say? The greatest source of employment in the United States over the past three years has come from the oil and gas industry. This has occurred in spite of the administration’s attempts to regulate and inhibit growth at every turn. The oil and gas industry is a poster child for ingenuity, entrepreneurism, and free market triumph over statism. Thank God we have hydrocarbons, and the individual property ownership rights to all that is below the land we own. The President’s pandering to wackos on the environmental left has left him on the outside looking in as America has undergone its own energy revolution.
Your guess is as good as mine. I have no idea how with the profligate Fed spending over the past three years we do not yet have inflation. I have no idea why gold has swooned. The Dow closed over 16,000 the other day. It scares the hell out of me, but what do I know?
I own some shares, and I suspect many of you do too. Here is what worries me. When I travel throughout the Middle East and Asia, no one has Apple anymore. They have all switched to Samsung’s Android products which are linked to Google. Something is afoot here, and it may not bode well for Apple.
So, as I said, it’s complicated. Maybe you have a handle on it all. I don’t. This much I do know; if we don’t keep the House, and win the Senate in 2014, we are toast. And if we don’t put a Republican in the White House in 2016, well, shame on us. We deserve what we get. What a nightmare. Be well.
