Keep Your Eyes on the Prize!
“Equality, rightly understood as our founding fathers understood it, leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences; wrongly understood, as it has been so tragically in our time, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism.”
“Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”
Sound like Ronald Reagan? We reckon it could easily have been. But, no, these quotes belong to Senator Barry Goldwater, the Conservative Republican candidate for President in 1964. Lyndon Johnson walloped him with over 61% of the public vote.
You see folks, just being a Conservative doesn’t win the Oval Office. And the lesson of nearly 50 years ago is as true today as it was then. We must nominate a candidate who appeals not only to our true libertarian and conservative elements, but also to (yes, hold your breath) our Rockefeller republicans AND (keep holding your breath) that vast swath of Americans who consider themselves independent.
Many of us have lost perspective during the ongoing (and heated) primary process. The battle should not be one where each candidate has to prove how conservative he is. History has proven that conservatism alone does not win elections. Ronald Reagan was LIKEABLE. Ronald Reagan exuded TRUST. He was a Conservative who never stooped to the lowest common denominator. His ideas were big, and he expressed them in a way that all but the left and east coast effete elites could not only understand, but appreciate.
The sooner we pull together and realize this battle is about getting President Obama OUT of Washington, the better chance we actually have of succeeding.
Here are just two helpful tips to the candidates and all Americans following this see-saw (and destructive) primary process.
1) Stop trying to be Ronald Reagan. There was only one Ronald Reagan. Be yourself. Step up and demonstrate leadership. Show America how YOU can LEAD. Make a difference. The next time you are thinking of comparing yourself to Ronald Reagan, think again. You aren’t Ronald Reagan.
2) Don’t waste your breath or ours complaining about the Main Stream Media (MSM). They don’t like you. They will never like you. THEY HAVE NEVER LIKED YOU. Consider this plant by CBS in the heat of the Goldwater-Johnson campaign in 1964 (and chronicled by Wikipedia and George Will)
“Shortly before the Republican convention, CBS reporter Daniel Schorr wrote from Germany that “It looks as though Senator Goldwater, if nominated, will be starting his campaign here in Bavaria, center of Germany’s right wing” and “Hitler‘s stomping ground” and finding that Goldwater would be speaking to a gathering of “right-wing Germans” uniting the extremists in both countries. In fact, there was no such meeting nor trip planned.”
So as we prepare for the Florida primary, and those that follow, Opine Needles implores all Americans interested in reversing the engines of this redistributionist debt machine to focus on the big picture. In other words, keep your eyes on the prize!
